Not My FO: Vogue 8766

Last summer, while visiting my parents, my mom helped me fit my muslin for Vogue 8766, and she decided to test out our modifications using some fabric from her stash. She started making this dress, and when I tried it on in October, it was too big like the version I had made myself. That did make me feel a little bit better because it meant my sloppy sewing wasn’t entirely to blame. Fast forward to when I was visiting my parents this past March, and I found the incomplete dress in my mom’s sewing room and tried it on. Through the magic of pizza, it fit! So I asked my mom to finish the lining, and she did and sent it up to Seattle when she was done. It’s once again a little bit on the big side, but that’s what belts are for. It’s a nice colorful dress for spring, and I plan on wearing it to death. This whole experience has made me give up on the idea of making perfectly fitted sewn garments, and oddly enough, that’s actually renewed my interest in sewing dresses.

It’s very pretty, like you. ๐Ÿ™‚ It kind of reminds me of a dress I wore back in 1961 when I was 13. Mine had orange flowers with yellow and green though but it looks like it was made with the same pattern. My mom had it made for me. I wish I had been able to keep some of my clothes from the 50’s & 60’s although I wouldn’t be able to wear them they would be a warm reminder of better days. ๐Ÿ™‚ Love the orange belt! ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. I made this exact same pattern! I had to fit it myself and it took me several muslins. I want to make loads of them to wear to death. Yours looks fabulous! What a gorgeous print and fit too ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Wow, what a gorgeous dress! And I love the belt with it, it gives it some kind of punctuation. The colours are just fabulous and suit you very well!

  4. This is beautiful! I think sometimes we try to overfit things. If it fits like a second skin, we better hope the skin doesn’t change, but inevitably, it does! So, as you say, that’s what belts are for ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. you look gorgeous!! I love that silhouette on you, so flattering. And that print is beautiful. Your mom did a great job!

  6. Love the fabric and the style! Bet it looks great with a card too. ๐Ÿ™‚ With all my knitting/sewing garments I’ve had to take a step back and NOT think “perfect” but more in the regard of what I’m happy with. Usually I have to make a butt-load of wearable muslins, all the while wearing those muslins before I get something fitted sorta perfect. But it’s a lot of fun. ๐Ÿ™‚ Love to see you’ll be sewing in the future. Can’t wait to see what you make next.

I totally agree with the idea of realizing that sewn things don’t have to be perfect. I think once you take the pressure off yourself, it’s a lot easier to sew. I’ve got a small stack of stuff to sew, but I haven’t wanted to work on it because it won’t be perfect (there will always be some part I had to rip back and fix, and even though no one else will see it, it bothers me). Unfortunately, it’s hard to remember that imperfection is fine!
