The Killer Shrews

MHM

It’s that time of year, again! Every October I feature some horrible movies that are fun to knit to. Last year I featured bad vampire movies, and I liked having a theme, so this year I’ll be looking at classic horror movies from the 40s, 50s, and 60s. I have to give a shout out to two old movies that I’ve already featured, The House on Haunted Hill and Arsenic and Old Lace, because those are favorites of mine and would be on this year’s list if I hadn’t already written about them, but now onto some truly horrible movies!.

Ah, The Killer Shrews! The premise is delightfully 50s with a science experiment gone wrong. In a 30 second explanation, we find out that a scientist was working on an experiment to shrink humans in order to solve world hunger (if that sounds familiar, that’s because it’s a common cliche of resizing fiction that also happens in a few other 50s B-movies) using shrews as his test subject. He ends up creating giant shrews the break loose and take over the island his lab is on. Hilarity Horror ensues! The best/worst part isn’t even the ridiculous premise! It’s the special effects. They’re so silly!

  1. Yay! I love your horror movie series! Glad to see it back!

Have you ever watched Svengoolie? Old Horror movies + schlocky jokes = Saturday night fun. He’s on MeTV.

    1. I’ve never heard of that before! It looks like fun.

  2. LOL! The video clip you posted was hilarious in itself. ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks for such a fun movie suggestion.

  3. I love B-movies, it’s one of those things that I can’t explain. I just love them. I’ll try to watch the ones you recommend here. I also like old sci-fi like in The Forbidden Plannet. And not so old B-Movies, like Bubba Ho-tep. Glorious:

  4. So fun. I LOVE Arsenic and Old Lace! Have you seen Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man? I saw it a couple years ago at the Grand Illusion and it was AWESOME and awful. Total worth seeing.

  5. YES. This reaches Darkplace levels of hilarity.
Come for the killer shrews, stay for the White-Hot Sexual Tension between the hero and token broad.
The other great thing about this movie is that if you try to drink along with the characters you’ll probably die.

  6. Hi Andi, I have awarded you the Liebster Award! Please check out my latest blog post for information! ๐Ÿ™‚ http://onlylivingfortoday.blogspot.com/2013/10/the-liebster-award.html

  7. Get on Netflix and pull up the MST3K movies available right now.

The Final Sacrifice – it is one of the top three worst movies ever made. It’s incredibly Canadian. The MST3K guys even kind of take a backseat in large seats of it, hardly even able to snark things are just so hilariously awful. Check it out.

Also Hand of Satan or Touched by Satan or something like that – also an MST3K. It’s a 70’s movie about a guy who pull sinto a small town and falls for a local girl that may or may not be a witch. It is replete with meaningful pauses. Or pauses where the actors just forgot their lines. It’s not clear which.

I just want to knit muzzles for every one of those shrews. Something in indigo should be nice.
