I have a love/hate relationship with the cabled cast on. It has some great qualities like it’s fairly attractive, and it creates a firm edge that doesn’t stretch out of shape, and it’s a single tail cast on so you can use it everywhere… But I just do not like working it. I find it to be time consuming and not rhythmic, and if I need to do it, there will usually be whining involved. It’s a good cast on, though, so sometimes I just have to suck it up and do it.
The edge it creates is firm and sturdy. It’s not totally rigid, but it doesn’t have a lot of give. I find it to be a little on the bulky side for a cast on edge that stitches will later be picked up from, but this is my go-to cast on for exposed edges that have to be cast on mid-row, like on the neck of my mint green sweater.
Cast on from the end of the row, this method creates a wrap around the edge stitch, preventing the loose stitch problem that the previous methods had. Depending on the gauge, this can create a bit of a hole, but it’s not always noticeable.
