Iz: A New Cowl Pattern

iz04

Every year I think to myself, “I’m going to do something fun for the holidays on my blog.” After that, I promptly forget about it until it’s too late to plan anything. But not this year! I thought it would be fun to share three of my personal patterns, stuff I made just for myself or, in this case, one of my friends. I’m going to be releasing one each week leading up to Christmas. All three patterns will be free to download until January first when I’ll make them my standard accessory price, $5. The projects are quick knits so they’re great for last minute Christmas gifts, but they’re also nice little treats for yourself as a reward after you finish all of your holiday crafting.

In case you forgot or the name didn’t tip you off, I originally designed this cowl for Iz when we had our little cowl swap with Katie. I’m just going to be upfront and say that the construction is pretty clever. The cowl uses short rows to create the color block wedges, so only one color of yarn is used at a time. The short rows make this fly off your needles without you ever noticing.

The cowl is knit using two skeins of Madelinetosh Vintage on 5mm needles. It’s about 44 inches around and 6.5 inches deep, so it’s a good length to loop around your neck twice when it’s chilly out, but it’s not too long to wear straight. This is one of my favorite cowl sizes, and I’d like to eventually make my own cowl using this pattern.
