Simple Striped Beanie

Back in October, when I was in New Zealand, after I finished knitting a quick chunky shawl, I realized that vacation knitting was a good time to knit myself some new accessories, so I bought two skeins of Zealana Cozi in Wellington and started a simple striped beanie. I haven’t knit myself new accessories in years because I’m always busy with work knitting, so I was pretty excited about having a new hat.

I improvised the whole thing based on an under-sized swatch that I measured while waiting for lunch to arrive at a cafe. It looks a little slouchy when I have it sitting back off my bangs, and it fits like a typical beanie when I pull it down over my forehead. I used 8 sets of decreases, and it took me a few tries to figure out the right number of even rounds to go between decrease rounds, but that’s what 17 hours on a plane is good for!

These photos are from right after I finished the hat. I wasn’t sure if I could pull off the camel colored yarn with blonde hair, but now that my hair is darker again (these pictures are from October), it looks perfect with my hair and red winter coat.

Where can I find the pattern for this red stripe beanie? I really like your newsletter, it is full of great info for even an old knitter like me. This new stuff sometimes makes me want to cry. Like, up to now, I had never blocked. I still haven’t but I have a small pile of stuff that I need to do. Thank you for your time and dedication. Linda

    1. There’s no pattern. I improvised the hat while on vacation.

And I’m sure you’ve blocked your knitting because it’s what you do when you lay it out to dry after washing. The terminology might be unfamiliar, but it’s hard to avoid it if you wash your sweaters.
