New Crop Top Pattern: Fizz

Fizz by Andi Satterlund

I’m really excited to share my new pattern Fizz with you today because it’s an adorable summer top, and the pattern is a special first for me, but we’ll get to that in a bit. Fizz is an almost seamless halter-neck crop top knit on 3.75 mm needles using Quince & Co. Chickadee. Wool sounds like an odd choice, but its elasticity is what really makes this top work. My version took only two skeins of yarn, and that makes this project really fast to make, so you have plenty of time to knit yourself a summery top and wear it before the weather cools down.

Fizz is knit from the bottom up using a turned hem to create an elastic casing. Knitting the hem is done seamlessly so it stays nice and stretchy, and you won’t have to worry about popping a seam when you’re pulling on your top.

The body of the top is then knit using short row shaping. The short rows are broken into two sections that form mirrored trapezoids. They create a really nice line and fit well. With all of that done, this part of the top is completed with an i-cord bind off.

Stitches are picked up and knit to make the straps which button in the back, and the center of the front is gathered to make a sweet-heart neckline. If you don’t want to bother with seaming, you can leave your top the way it is, but if you’d like to, you can add the front placket by picking up stitches at the center front, knitting a strip, and then seaming it on the wrong side. Add in a few decorative buttons to finish things off!

So what’s so special about the pattern itself? Well, it’s a custom pattern generator, and it’s my first time trying something like this. Because there’s so little to this top, it really needs to fit well, and customization is the way to go. The pattern is designed to be used on a computer with Adobe Reader. It gives guidance on taking your measurements because accuracy is crucial for good fit. You enter in your measurements on page 2 of the pattern, and everything else, including the yardage requirements, fills in.

All of the variables on the pattern get filled out to fit your measurements perfectly. You don’t have to do any extra work other than taking your measurements, and you don’t have to do any of the math. The pattern does it all for you! You can buy the pattern for $6.50 from my pattern shop, or you can check out Fizz on Ravelry.

This looks really cute and the generator would be so handy to make it fit properly. I didn’t think I’d ever wear such a short top as outer wear but that is somewhat stupid ’cause I do wear bikini’s…
But I’ll leave this to the more toned and flawless-skinned part of knitting people!

  6. It’s so cute! Love it! And that self-customising pattern is really interesting – cool idea.
