Not Nice Knitting

sinceresheep_equityfingering_swatch

Sometimes I get the perfect yarn for a project, and I have the best stitch pattern in mind for it, but they just do not play nice together. That’s what happened with this swatch. It’s not that it doesn’t look good. I love the way it looks. It’s that it was beyond unpleasant to knit this swatch. The double decrease the stitch pattern features, sl2tog-k1-psso, was not easy to work with this yarn at this gauge. It was fiddly and stitches kept sneaking off my needles. I didn’t even want to finish a properly sized swatch, which was a good clue that this probably isn’t the right stitch pattern for an entire project. Knitting should be fun, not obnoxiously difficult

Sl2tog, k1 – psso….it’s like another language! I’ve been knitting for about 3 years now and I reckon I’m not too shabby but looking at that I’m like “whaaa?” Then again I’ve recently started a pattern that has a series of k5tog, m1, m3 stitches. M1 is sweet, k5tog- sweet…. but m3?! I can’t even find decent info online on how to do this!

  2. I agree! Time to move onto the next stitch pattern.

I am knitting a baby car seat cover that has that very stitch set. I’m using a 50/50 nylon/acrylic (Fantasy) yarn by Dark Horse Yarns. It’s an ok yarn but does has a tendency to split. The stitch set can be a bear until you “find your groove.” Youtube is a great resource for stitch patterns as is your local yarn store.

  4. This has happened to me as well. Don’t even pause. Just RIP and move on to another yarn or another project or both. Life is too short for unpleasant knitting.

  5. I think this is a common occurrence among knitters. I’ve had it happen with my latest project…I just have to accept that the union of yarn and stitch pattern was not going to happen.

  6. Rise above it. Try a couple of rows, at least, where you just ignore the pattern and do slip 1, k2tog, psso.

    1. Nah, I think I’m better off using a completely different stitch pattern. Changing the decrease would get rid of what I like about the look of this one.

  7. The swatch does look nice, but desire to knit it is most important. 🙂 I love the looks of that yarn!
