Fall for Cotton Dress Planning

Rochelle and Tasha are hosting a Fall for Cotton vintage sew-along, and I’ve decided to join in! I won’t be sewing from a vintage pattern, but I’ll be using this Vogue pattern and aiming for a bit of a 50s look. I’m going to combine the sleeveless bodice with the circle skirt. You might remember that I did a failed muslin of that version of the bodice with a different skirt. The Craftsy class on fitting was kind of useless for my fit problems on my next muslin so I ended up taking it with me when I visited my parents in July, and my mom helped me get all of my fit issues sorted out. With my pattern adjusted, I just needed some motivation to get a dress made, and this sew-along is just what I need!

I’ll be using a plaid cotton from my fabric stash. I recently preshrunk it, so I just need to iron out the wrinkles, and I’m ready to go! I have a few other pieces of fabric in my stash that are big enough to make this dress, but I chose the plaid for a few reasons. The plaid should be easy to work with because the grain is so easy to identify, and I have tons of this fabric so I can redo the bodice at least twice if I need to. The fabric also has no sentimental value for me so it won’t be the end of the world if the dress ends up weird. This is going to be my first dress so I’m trying to be realistic with my expectations. I’m hoping it will turn out cute and wearable, but there’s a slight chance that it might not.

  1. I’m joining this sew-a-long, too! I can’t wait to see the finished dress! The plaid is really cute; it would look really cute with a red miette!

  2. Oh how fun! I love that plaid and I’m excited to see how this turns out!

  3. I’ve just started sewing too! I made a dress without the muslin, such a big mistake 🙁 i’m not ready to try matching plaid though!!

  4. I’m also joining the sew-along 🙂 That fabric looks nice, the only difficult part will be matching up seams. I’ve never done it but there are quite a few tutorials online. Really looking forward to the finished garment!

    1. I’m going to be bad and only worry about lining up the plaid on the back. Getting it right on the back and the side seams seems like too much to hope for.

  5. I’m joining too but going for a 1930s pattern, only my third dress. I’ve just found your blog and as a keen knitter I’m really enjoying it.

  6. I have a skirt waiting in the wings – and then on to a dress for me! I also have a pair of pants for my son and a top for my daughter, and all I’ve ever sewn are quilt squares, a scarf and a heated rice pad! I’m making the pattern (and muslin) for the skirt, and I’ll be making a muslin for the dress as well. The pants and top for my kids shouldn’t be too hard, I hope!

  7. I’m sure your dress is going to be amazing! Sounds like you’ve worked out most of your fitting issues so now you just have to go for it! You’ll do just fine 🙂

  8. It’s totally going to be cute and wearable! I’m excited to see the finished product!

  9. Ooh, nice fabric! I can’t wait to see how it turns out.
