Weaving in Ends

sy04

I have such a love/hate relationship with color work. I love designing it, and when I’m working the rows leading up to it, I can’t wait to get started on it. But once I get a few rows in, I start feeling a little grumbly about it all. It’s slow going, and I really have to pay attention to every stitch in the row. And then there are all of those ends to weave in when you’re done… I’ve been putting off weaving in the ends on a bunch of projects so now I have quite a pile to deal with. But in the end, the effect is totally worth the work which is why I keep dreaming up more color work projects, even while I’m cranky with my current ones.

  1. Hang in there – those colours are glorious!

  2. Can’t wait for the big reveal on all these awesome projects!

  3. I feel this way about cables. I understand them, and think they are pretty, but I hate having to stop my groove and do the needle gymnastics. This is probably why I’ve knitted half a dozen stockinette socks this year XD

  4. what’s your weaving in technique? I still haven’t gotten used to it with knitting, much easier with crochet.

    1. I actually find it easier on knitting than crochet, but I typically use my crochet hook to do it. I just follow the paths of the purl bumps with my weaving. Sometimes I’ll turn and work my way back a few stitches if I’m worried about my ends worming out.

  5. I guess you I have to weave them in when you’re designing, but I’m embarrassed by how many things I’ve worn with ends still hanging free. At this point it would almost feel like a sacrilege to weave the ends on my first pair of legwarmers. Those awful little threads are like old friends.

  6. Hi Andi, I haven’t really been that ‘present’ on your blog, but just nominated you for a WordPress Family Award as a big thank you for being a pretty regular part of my blog reading!!

You can see what I wrote here for more on why I chose you and if you want to take part in the process… http://fromthepurlside.wordpress.com/2013/06/20/and-the-award-goes-to-me.

Thanks for making blogland so fun, and for Miette, my first enjoyable lace project! 😉

  7. Oh, I’m so with you on the weaving in ends thing! A big reason for loving knitting on circulars is definitely the reduction in end weaving, not to mention less seaming (equally ‘aaargh!’). As for colourwork, I do like designing it and miss it when I’m not knitting it, especially since I learned to hold and use a colour in each hand, but I definitely end up craving some straight up, ‘knit while watching TV’ work by the end of any given project!
