Buffy the Vampire Slayer

It might be blasphemous for a fan of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer tv show to include the movie on this list, but this awful movie has earned a place. It’s very campy and so stereo-typically 90s. Imagine if the tv show spin-off of Clueless had vampires in it. You’re probably imagining something fairly close to this movie. Complete with neon, spandex and valley girl slang, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie alternately makes me laugh and scratch my head in confusion. As I watch I can’t help but wonder who thought this movie was a good idea, what was Rutger Hauer thinking and how on earth did a spin-off tv show based on it get green lit.

  1. I grew up on this movie. Yes, it’s awful, but in the best way. Did I tell you I am FINALLY watching the tv series? I’m in the middle of season 2, and totally loving it!

    1. It’s about time! Season two is one of my favorites.

  2. I actually prefer the movie to the series, but I can’t say I’ve seen many episodes of the series. I feel like the movie is deliberately campy and is making fun of the whole premise.

    1. I think they movie sort of missed the monsters-as-metaphors-for-growing-up thing by making fun of the idea of a high school aged vampire slayer so much. I actually think that’s the movies biggest failure.

  3. Yup, I also grew up on the movie. I actually wasn’t a fan of the (far superior) TV show until college! So this one has a place in my heart, too.

  4. A horrible movie…that spawned one of my all time favorite tv shows. 🙂

  5. Haha I will watch this if I spot it on tv, only because Luke Perry is in it 😉 I avoided the tv show because I thought it was going to be bad like the movie. I love, love, love the show!

  6. The Buffy movie was required at every sleepover from fifth grade on! The movie is tons of fun, but definitely does not match the show for emotional impact. Although, I have to say I love the infinitely quotable one liners from the movie: “Pike is not a name, it’s a fish”

  7. Wait, what?! I honestly thought that the Buffy film was based on the series… (I grew up on the series, not the film, have never even seen it I think. Need to fix that now.)

I’m awfully grateful that the Buffy tv show was greenlit. My life would be incomplete without Joss Whedon. However, I was a huge fan of the movie growing up. I have no idea why my mom let me watch this movie as I was younger than 10 when it came out but it fed a need to see strong female characters in movies/tv. Between the original Buffy and She-Ra, I had some kickass female characters to look up to.

  9. I love this movie! So fun and campy. In contrast, the show was (to me) boring and flat. I saw this in the theater when it first came out and had a blast.

  10. I have to admit, I’m a sucker for the Buffy movie. Really, what’s not to love? 🙂
