What’s your favorite movie to knit to?

thoughts

I know I’m not the only movie watching knitter out there. I have to ask do you have a favorite movie to knit to?

My favorite used to be The Fellowship of the Ring. There’s something about the gloomy and woodsy vibe of the movie that makes it perfect for knitting. I knit my first complete scarf while watching all three Lord of the Rings movies and I’ve associated them with knitting ever since. I have a hard time deciding on a favorite now. I like movies set in the early 20th century because that was a great time for knits, but I have a hard time settling on a favorite.

Do you have a favorite movie to knit by or any recommendations?

  1. I crochet and one of my favorite movies to crochet to is Beaches. Cheesy, I know, but Bette Midler wears so many great crochet-ish outfits in that movie! ๐Ÿ™‚

Other than that I put on a lot of reality competitions and documentaries because they require only about half of my attention so I can be creative with my crochet work while also being slightly distracted by the entertainment.

I should have included crochet in this! I also like to crochet when I watch silly stuff, but crochet takes more looking for me so I don’t usually watch movies with it.

  2. Amy

Pride and Prejudice. The one with Colin Firth. A&E version. The BEST movie ever.

Downton Abbey. A Masterpiece Theater series. There is only one season so far, but it is GREAT.

    Happy Knitting!

  3. I have loads! It depends on my mood and what I’m knitting. I often find my inspiration to knit in movies so if I’m knitting a fisherman’s sweater – I’ll probably watch The Shipping News. Or if I’m knitting someting vintage, I might choose a movie that “matches” my knitting. ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. I mostly crochet and tend to watch television shows while working. My all time favorites to crochet to are the X Files and Monk repeats, but I also frequently have the Food Network in the background while crocheting. I can also easily crochet to any of my favorite movies which I have seen many times. For me, that would mean the Empire Strikes Back (or really any Star Wars movie), Blade Runner, The Thing, Alien, Aliens, the Terminator or T2. It drives my bf batty when I crochet while we are watching a movie for the first time, but I do that too sometimes if I have a deadline :). As for my knitting, I find I need more focus so I generally don’t watch anything complex while knitting.

I love your taste in movies. I’ll work on projects when I watch new movies by myself, but I always seem to get sucked in by the movie and stop working halfway through.

  5. I Capture the Castle! It’s moody/gloomy & kind of long, and there are tons of amazing 30s-style knits and clothes in general. I also watched Ballet Shoes just because the sweaters were so great, though the movie is kinda cheesy. (Not that cheesy is bad, but it’s definitely more of a nostalgic kids’ movie.) On, and Enchanted April — really great style, and it’s more cheerful.

I need to rewatch I Capture the Castle. The first time I saw it I was distracted by one of the brothers being played by an actor who was on Buffy.

      1. haha, yes! I wasn’t much of a Riley fan (thought he was too boring) but once I overcame the initial distraction, I enjoyed the movie! (I have watched it 5 or 6 times since I last saw him on Buffy, though, so maybe I’ve replaced the mental association.)

I have to say all the harry potter movies, something about knitting and watching hp is just comforting.

  9. I knit to Pride and Prejudice (miniseries, recent film version, whatever) and Marie Antoinette quite often… probably because they have great costume design and colors that leave me wanting to knit all the things.

  11. Lately,

I’ve been knitting/sewing to TV shows instead of movies. My all time fave for knitting is Gilmore Girls, but it’s mostly because I know the show by heart. It’s nice to have something I don’t have to focus on entirely, but it still gives me something enjoyable.

Kara (Knitting Lemonade) also got me into many British mini series/movies, so right now I’m watching Bleak House, which I love.

  13. Awesome question! I don’t have a fave movie to knit to, but my fave audio-book to knit to is definitely Harry Potter. Perfect for half-brain involvement and occasional giggles ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. I’ve been watching Terry Jones documentaries while knitting. But I also have enjoyed just about every period film Helena Bonham Carter has been in.

  15. I’ve only been knitting for about 10 months at this point, so I don’t think that’s given me enough time to come up with a favorite movie to knit to. BUT, by far my favorite tv show to watch while knitting is Bones. I have no idea why I like matching my cozy knits to such a gross/gruesome show, but I can watch it for hours on end while I knit so it’s a perfect companion! I burned through all of the aired seasons and went through some pretty serious withdrawal… I’m now on the lookout for a replacement show, but have yet to find it yet.

Something funny that I’ve watched a million times! Like Anchorman, Step Brothers, Talladega Nights (basically anything Will Ferrell), Just Friends, etc. Or something really vintage-y that makes me want to be classy like Gosford Park or I Capture the Castle! =)

I love watching Gosford Park when I’m working on retro knits.

  19. Hello! I find the decision of what to knit to very interesting – at the moment my favourite things are TV programmes like Poirot or Miss Marple because they tend to be on during weekend afternoons. When it comes to films, Harry Potter films are great, but also the Austen adaptations work too! These knitting sessions must be accompanied by tea, some sort of biscuit/cake and preferably gloomy weather outside ๐Ÿ™‚

I love watching Agatha Christie adaptations while I’m knitting. They always have amazing costumes.

  21. Groundhog Day. Perfect for when you’re knitting the same pattern repeats over and over and over…

  23. Harry Potter series, Signs, The American President, A League of Their Own, Steel Magnolias.

Listening to books is great, too! Harry Potter series, Outlander series, Pern series, The Cat Who… series, Alex Cross series, Kay Scarpetta Series, and have been told the Dresden Files Series, too.

  25. I love to sit down and knit through the entire Harry Potter series. I make some serious headway on projects when I do this – made an entire sweater back last time.

My other favorite thing to knit through is musicals – Sound of Music, My Fair Lady and Mary Poppins are wonderful examples. Then again, I also love to knit through John Wayne, Elvis and Cary Grant movies. I guess if it’s a movie that I know by heart, I love to knit through it. The same goes for TV series – Dr. Who, anything Gordon Ramsay and The Graham Norton Show are all perfect for knitting.

  26. what a great question! i’d have to say pride & prejudice – the new and bbc ones.
i also like to knit to comedies that i love, step brothers & nacho libre are on the top of the list.
but, oddly, i like to knit next to the boy while he plays a video game – some of them have plot lines just like a move ;D

  28. I go through phases with my movie knitting. Right now it’s Disney movies, but I’ve watched a lot of period dramas too. And LOTR. Always LOTR.

  30. Hands down, the entire series of “Cosmos” from Carl Sagan. It’s ‘watch it now’ kind of perpetually on Netflix and it’s interesting, educational, great stories, but also the kind of relaxing, quiet thing you can watch if you need to stop paying attention to the TV and pay attention to that weird thing you did to the WIP when you put it down, grabbed some tea, came back and forgot that you forgot where you were. ๐Ÿ™‚

  31. I like to watch any of the lord or the rings movies, especially the first and second one, and the hobbit. I can knit lace to those!
