Le petit renard

I was standing in front of the magazine rack a the grocery store looking to see if there was a new issue of Empire when something bright and colorful caught my eye.ย  It was Cross Stitcher magazine and they had a cute little fox cross stitch kit as the insert. I think it was the orange that drew me in.

It wasn’t hard to figure out how to cross stitch. It’s pleasantly simple, but I found flipping my work back and forth to be a bit annoying. I was also pretty slow because I was new at it. I thought cross stitch might be fun because I could use all of those intarsia charts that I doodle up but don’t have time to knit, but I definitely knit faster. I also prefer the results of my knitting to the results of my cross stitch. It hasn’t hooked me in.

I made a few mods to the chart to make things look a little less clunky, but most of the changes were small mistakes that I didn’t feel like fixing. The outline is pretty sloppy. I had a hard time figuring out where to make the lines. I would have left it off completely if the pale blue background and white fur weren’t such similar colors. The white disappeared when you looked at it from a distance, but the little fox looked pretty cute up close without the outline. Right now he looks awesome from far away and sort of average up close. I don’t think it’s a bad compromise because he’s going up on my bulletin board.

  1. He looks ace. Can’t believe it was your first attempt!

But one this is making me wonder… why are you flipping your work back and forth? What bit of the process are you doing when this happens?

    1. I was having problems with getting my needle up from the backside where I wanted it to go without looking at it. I kept putting the needle through the middle of where the X goes when I tried to do it in one pass from the front. My needle might have been too sharp. I was using an embroidery needle.

      1. Oh yes, I think it was your needle.

With a blunt one you can just aim vaguely, shimmy it about and eventually it pops through the hole.

Shame you don’t get a needle in the kit really.

Good cross stitch practice says you should do a cross in four motions rather than doing back and forth in one motion as it maintains better tension. That’s the theory anyway…

  2. Outlining is my favorite part of cross stitching. I think you did a good job! And I just noticed this entry title. Le renard is my favorite character from “Le Petit Prince”. The description he gives of the Prince reminds me of my husband. He’s got wheat colored hair.

  3. It’s so cute! That was one of my favorite things about magazines in England – they all have some sort of “prize” inside! Also, I love the little felt frame he’s in.

  4. Ok, foxie is so cute. It has been a long time since I cross-stitched, but I really loved it.

  5. adorable!! I think you might like this knitting chart, then: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/small-fox-socks

  6. He’s cute! You did a great job!

Between you and mooncalf, I just might have to dig out the 101 Dalmatian sampler I started and abandoned years ago. You’re getting me itchy to start cross stitching again! ๐Ÿ™‚

Mormor was a very experience X-stitcher, and I have all the stuff, if you want to take a look. I didn’t keep absolutely everything, but there’s a lot.

    1. I’d love to go through it.

It’s sort of mixed up with my stuff, but this is an area where I’m actually organized. ๐Ÿ˜€

  8. Love the cute fox. I used to exclusively cross stitch…then I learned to knit and it sort of took over. I miss cross stitching. ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. Awww, look at him, all adorable with his outline and his little felt frame and everything!

  10. Your fox is so cute! Love.
