Your knitting and crochet time

I originally learned to knit so I had something to do while watching movies and TV. I started knitting more and more so I started watching more and more movies. I managed to create the world’s greatest vicious shopping cycle. I need yarn to knit with while I watch movies, so I buy more yarn and then I’ll need more movies to watch while I knit, so I buy more DVDs and then I’ll need more yarn to knit with and so on and so forth.

When you add in my weird tendencies to do things like try to collect a large variety of Batman movies, or try to watch every movie by Jean-Pierre Jeunet or Christopher Nolan or Terry Gilliam, it’s easy to see how my DVD collection ended up giant really quickly. To give you an idea of how out of control my DVD purchasing is, here is a list of the worst aspect of my DVD hoard: my bad vampire movie collection.

  • Bram Stoker’s Dracula
  • Queen of the Damned
  • Dracula 3000
  • The Lost Boys
  • Lost Boys 2
  • Salem’s Lot
  • Underworld
  • 30 Days of Night
  • The Forsaken
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer
  • Innocent Blood
  • Blade
  • Dracula 2000
  • Dracula II
  • Atom Age Vampire
  • Count Dracula and His Vampire Bride/The Satanic Rites of Dracula
  • The Bat (1926)
  • The Bat (1959)
  • Blood Of Dracula’s Castle
  • The Bloody Vampire
  • Crpyt of the Living Dead
  • The Devil Bat
  • Horrible Sexy Vampire
  • Horror Express
  • The Last Man on Earth
  • Nightmare Castle
  • Nosferatu
  • Prime Evil
  • Terror Creatures from the Grave
  • The Vampire Bat
  • Vampire Happening
  • Vampire’s Night Orgy
  • The Werewolf Vs. Vampire Women
  • The Witches Mountain

Plus I have all of Buffy and Angel. It’s pretty bad. Luckily I usually spend under $5 on my DVDs. I’ve taken to hunting for them on Amazon and at this awesome second hand record store at home called Dimple that has a nice used DVD section. This year has been terrible for me because the UK uses a different region code for DVDs so I can’t buy any movies. I keep seeing cheap ones I want at charity shops and stuff. It sucks.

I mostly just watch DVDs while I knit, but I am a student so I can’t do that all the time. I’ve gotten pretty good at knitting and reading at the same time. The only problem with that is that it only works with big books and PDFs. Paper backs just won’t stay open with no hands. Because of the paper back issue, I started downloading audio books in order to get some schoolwork in while knitting. I only really do older periods of literature so I can find most things on Librivox.org because the books are in the public domain.

  1. I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!! I don’t see anything crazy about it at all ๐Ÿ˜‰

  2. Have you ever seen Andy Warhol’s Frankenstein? It is the most terrible B-movie (hmm, more like a Z-movie) ever, it’s grose and ridiculous and hilarious. I recommend it. ๐Ÿ˜€ Though it might be better to see it with a bunch of people so you can all be grossed out and laugh together – that’s what I did with a bunch of friends for one movie night… It was awesome. ๐Ÿ˜€

    1. I haven’t! I’ll keep an eye out for that one. It sounds like something I’d love.

  3. It’s my husband that has the DVD habit, trouble is we are running out of ideas to store them as we have hundreds!

  4. That’s an awesome vampire movie collection! I’m always trying to figure out how to read and knit at the same time; it works well with hard-back comic books. I hadn’t thought of trying the pdfs – good idea.

  5. Loved this post- brilliant tip for audiobooks for free. I am a podcast nut as they’re free so I like the idea of audiobooks as paperbacks will NOT stay open will they?

  6. I don’t think I knew you were a Buffy fan! I also own all of both BTVS and Angel! And, of course, watching them while I knit. ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Amazing how you can knit and study at the same time! Ah, the days of Buffy…

  8. I never watched Buffy back in the day, but my boyfriend is a big fan, so we are slowly working our way through, we’ve just finished Season 3.

Your blog has become one of my favourites in Knitting and Crochet Blog Week, so please keep blogging, I love your writing and your projects.

  9. I am proud to say that I either own, or have seen at least 80% of the movies on your list, including all the Lost Boys sequels, all of the Dracula related movies, Buffy, Angel, and several other bad vampire films. They make fantastic knitting movies ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. The knitting/reading problem led me to audiobooks too. I love them! I either download them or even better – get the disks from my local library and rip them to my ipod. It’s so nice to be read too!

  11. Love those vampire movies! I say, the cheesier the better ๐Ÿ™‚ For a few years in college, I worked in a great record store, which also had a fairly large used dvd section. We were able to use our employee discount on everything in the store, including already-cheap used stuff… I ended up buying hundreds of dvds! The best part was that we had a fairly “high-brow” customer base (intellectual snobs who are music snobs are often film snobs too) so I ended up with bizarre art films, lots of French New Wave, and nearly every Criterion Collection dvd ever released. (Maybe I’m a snob too?)

But I move around a lot, so I needed to streamline. I still have all my Buffy/Angel dvds, as well as a few other favorites, but I sold almost everything else. (OK, so I still have a box or two in my parents’ garage somewhere, haha.) I can’t recommend Netflix enough — they don’t have everything available to “Watch Instantly” but their actual disc catalog is quite vast. I don’t know if there’s a British equivalent to Netflix, though.

  12. Lisa S.

Hey, Andi, look for something called a PageMinder, by K1C2 out of Ventura CA. It’s a comb like thing for keeping books open while you knit, and it works on paperbacks and hardbacks. I found mine at my LYS.

    1. Thanks Aunt Lisa!
