KnitCroBlo4: A New Skill

DSC_1896
This picture has nothing to do with this post because I had no photos that did. It just looked too naked with only text. Plus, this thing is really cool. It’s from the Procession of Species at the Olympia Arts Walk.

After posting about my awesome egotism about knitting the other day I realized that there is one knitting technique that I truly fear. Steeking. I just can’t handle the idea of cutting my own knitting. I would love to be able to steek well so I can do it without fear. Oh! This reminds me of a somewhat related skill that I would like to have. I’d like to be able to sew zippers into my knitting well. Who knows? Maybe I can sew them in well. I’ve never tried it. I have two design ideas that I want to give a go and they both involve zippers. I’m not entirely sure how to go about attaching and finishing a zipper because my brain is caught up on how I would put a zipper in a woven garment.

There you have it. Steeks and zippers.

  1. Love the picture :DI wish I could sew zippers too…

  2. I have a Central Park Hoodie that I made in January, and I bought a zipper for it. It's still not sewn in but I'm wearing the CPH to death anyway!!

  3. Love the pic! ๐Ÿ˜€ Zippers are scary, I cannot imagineing me sewing one onto a knitted object..

  4. I wrote about steeks too! I'm going to have to do one soon and I'm scared :)Love the picture!

  5. Steeking sounds really scary, but that fish is even scarier ๐Ÿ˜€

  6. Steeking is terrifying! I don't want to think about taking scissors to my knitting, haha.

  7. I added steeking to my list also but totally forgot about zippers.

  8. The first cut is the one that's terrifying. After that you'll be fine!Particularly if the garment has more than one steek. I've just knit the EZ Green Sweater with four steeks (I never did any before) and I had to cut the sleeve steek stitches apart to start on the sleeve, there was no other way that I could continue knitting without cutting. It wasn't half as bad as I thought, in fact is was pretty darn easy. Amazingly. I did sew four lines by sewing machine, two on each side, just to be sure. I would use the technique again in a heart beat.Do a practice run on a tension square or a small project first, just for the experience!

  9. I totally wrote about steeking too. I have a feeling a lot of us fear it…You should knit something that looks like the whatever-it-is in the picture.

  10. Steeks give me the shivers!

  11. I love the random picture. I really have no desire to learn to steek…but I won't say never yet! ๐Ÿ™‚

  12. Yes, steeking is terrifying. Haven't fallen in love with a pattern that required it yet :)As for zippers, I was miserable sewing one into a cardigan a couple of years ago, and I've not done it since. However, a blog friend has posted a fantastic tutorial: http://pickinandthrowin.blogspot.com/2007/02/sewing-zipper-into-cardigan.html

  13. Haven't done zippers, but I have done steeks. Not that big a deal, once you've taken the plunge.
