Iz’s Cowl

One day on Twitter, Iz, Katie and I got to talking about how we never really knit for knitters. We decided that we should do a little swap, and we went with cowls. I knit one for Iz, Iz made one for Katie, and Katie made one for me. Iz got hers in the mail earlier this week, and I thought I would share some more pictures of it.

A few ideas came together for this cowl. First, I had been thinking about the sort of color work you can do using short row shaping on cowls. I also had been admiring a sweater Matilde has been working on with a diagonal block of color in seed stitch. I realized that a diagonal line in seed stitch was an easy way to try out my short row color work. When we decided on the swap, I struck me that in the right colors, this could be the perfect cowl for Iz.

When I think of Iz’s style, I think edgy and little tough, but in a sophisticated way, with neutral colors, geometric shapes and studs. I did actually try to figure out if there was a way to make studs on a cowl work. I don’t think there is. Studs and knitting probably don’t belong together.

Iz seems happy with the cowl so I think it was a success. I used two skeins of Madelinetosh Vintage and 5 mm needles. I’m thinking about knitting my own in brighter colors. I never used more than one color in a row, and the cowl is made up almost entirely of short rows (there are only 8 rows that aren’t short rows) so it feels really quick to knit. It was a lot of fun.

  1. I love what you’ve done! I think we definitely have to do this swap again!

  2. I love the cowl!

I can totally picture a line of studs going across the color change. Of course, my knowledge of studs are limited- I’m picturing one that pokes through the fabric with a back like safety eyes, as long as the back would be flat…

    1. But there’s no way to prevent them from being pulled out easily. Knits wiggle around so the flat back could slip between stitches, and the stud would fall off.

  3. I love the design!
